Summer 2011

I am pleased to update you on recent activities at ET Water, including new product introductions, a new free online service, corporate activities such as new funding, and a number of awards and recognition we have received from our industry peers and even from the US Department of Commerce for bringing jobs back to the USA from overseas with our Made in the USA products.

In the first six months of 2011 ET Water shipped more units than in all of 2010!  Much of this success was due to the launch of the revolutionary HermitCrab™, a universal smart controller and cloud-based water management service that converts conventional irrigation controllers to smart controllers in 10 minutes or less. HermitCrab recently received a ‘perfect score’ on the Irrigation Association's Smart Water Application Technology™ (SWAT) Performance Protocol test, and we are especially proud of this achievement.

Earlier this year we announced a Series C round of funding for ET Water.  The $2MM equity round was fully subscribed by our existing investors, showing their ongoing strong support for our product innovation and growth plans as we continue to develop and introduce new products and accelerate the distribution and sales of ET Water's patented water conservation and smart irrigation products and services.

In a first for ET Water, we recently launched GNOME™, a free Web-only service that provides homeowners nationwide with online advice on setting up optimal watering schedules regardless of what brand of controllers they use.  See www.etwatergnome.com.  Gnome is based on the same patented technology that regulates our ET Water controllers, and utilizes weather data from 10,000 Weatherbug stations across the USA to deliver appropriate local irrigation recommendations, and updates those recommendations as the weather and seasons change.  GNOME marks our first consumer web app for smart irrigation. And did I say it is free?!

Our most recent new product introduction is the SmartWorks Quick Connect Replacement Panel for Rain Bird 50-Pin, our latest replacement panel in the SmarkWorks family. This panel is designed specifically for owners of Rain Bird controllers with 50 pin connectors who desire to convert their systems to ET Water smart irrigation in less than 15 minutes.

We recently sponsored the Irrigation Association’s Third-Annual 2011 Water Conference “Water for the Future: The Role of Efficient Irrigation” in late July in Colorado, with Bob  Olson, our Regional Sales Manager, kicking-off panel discussions and showcasing our product line.  In early October we will be speaking at the WaterSmart Innovations Conference in Las Vegas, and at the end of October we will be speaking about smart irrigation in San Diego at the American Society of Landscape Architect’s conference.  Look for us there!

In closing I’d like to recognize and thank all of our partners who I believe represent the most progressive irrigation products distributors in the country, and especially our customers who are using ET Water wireless and digital technologies to improve the ways we all manage our landscapes. With your support and commitment, we have achieved nationwide distribution to customers in their local markets throughout United States.  See an example of excellent results and fast payback in the TerraCare Colorado case study below.

It’s an exciting time for smart irrigation technology. We are proud of our leadership position on the front lines of technology innovation and the adoption curve, and we appreciate your support as we work together to change this industry.  Our business goal remains steadfast, to upgrade and convert the traditional irrigation market to smart irrigation control.

Best regards,

ET Water Celebrates Smart Irrigation Month with the Launch of the GNOME Smart Irrigation Calculator

On July 6th we launched the nationwide availability of GNOME™ by ET Water, our first consumer web app for smart irrigation.

GNOME is a free Web-based water calculator that provides customized irrigation schedules to homeowners based on their local weather conditions and landscape profile. GNOME recommends just the right amount of water to use, frequently reducing water consumption by over-irrigators by 20 to 50 percent or more versus conventional clock-based "set it and leave it" irrigation schedules. The result is reduced water bills, better overall plant health and less runoff, which frequently is damaging to homes and the environment.

Water Savings Result in Payback in Less Than One Year

Bowles Crossing Shopping Center, Littleton, CO

Brent Trujillo, Colorado Operations Manager, Terracare Associates
Terracare Associates, one of the leading landscape contractors in Colorado and Northern California, began partnering with ET Water Systems three years ago to serve the water conservation and budgeting needs of a growing list of clients. Through their Water Conservation Program, Terracare Associates has installed ETwater™ smart controllers at commercial sites throughout the region, helping numerous clients reduce their landscape water use costs and conserve this valuable resource.

Site:
The Bowles Crossing Shopping Center site in Littleton, Colorado is comprised of nearly 75 acres of mixed landscape including more than 4 acres of turf. The high visibility of the property requires meticulous attention to detail and a high level of  workmanship. The scope of Terracare Associates services includes landscape maintenance of large turf areas, shrub beds, ground covers and perennial beds as well as planted islands and tree wells. Terracare Associates worked closely with site management to install ETwater™ controllers in early 2010.

Goal:
The goal of this effort was to lower the site’s water use costs and create a more sustainable landscape through appropriate plant selection and renovations .

Results:
In the first full 2010 irrigation season, Terracare Associates’ management of the ET Water System led to a decline in landscape water consumption of 3,463,744 gallons from 2009.  This decrease 37% in water use resulted in a water cost savings of $16,200 and achieved a recovery of the initial capital investment  in less than one year.  Due to the location of the property, the site was also eligible to participate in the Denver Water rebate program which added an additional $14,881 refund to the client.

“As stewards of our local and global communities, Terracare Associates partnership with ETwater™ was a natural fit. The success of the ET Water program has been extremely rewarding. As the largest installer of the ETwater™ clocks in Colorado, Terracare Associates’ commitment to the environment and sustainable operations has led to a lasting and successful partnership not only with ETwater™, but also with our clients.”  -- Brent Trujillo, Colorado Operations Manager, Terracare Associates

Terrain: Flat
Soil Type: Loamy clay

Seasonal Tips

“Summer Green”
Gregg Black, Technical Support Manager, ET Water

With summer still in full force in many parts of the United States, take these simple steps to ensure your landscape stays green and healthy.

  1. Turn on each landscape zone for two minutes. Inspect the sprinklers for any leaks or breaks.
  2. Note any brown areas in the turf and see if the sprinklers provide enough water to those areas. If not, see if you can make the necessary adjustments.
  3. Log in to your ETwater Manager account and use the Reports tool to print out the landscape characteristics for each zone. Does the information look right to you? Is there any chance the root depth or soil type is wrong? Remember, sometimes it makes sense to dig around the garden to make sure the landscape configuration information is accurate. If you give us good data, we’ll give you a summer-proof irrigation schedule!
  4. If, after making these adjustments, your landscape still looks stressed, just log in to your ETwater Manager account and find the water adjustment option for each station. If you think the sprinklers should run longer, increase the water budget. If you think the sprinklers should come on more frequently, adjust the target soil moisture depletion percentage.
